#MeToo: Where did it all start?

In the midst of the alarming rise of stories coming from every nook and corner of this world in the past few weeks, #Me Too is an effort to let the world know the magnitude of sexual harassment and assault. A platform that gives power to the women to come out of their shells and speak about the wrong  they face at the hands of men.

Where did it all start?

It started way back in 1996 when an activist Burke faced a young girl, badly heart-broken by her step-father.The ordeal of listening to her and failing to help her properly, gave rise to the movement. The movement aimed to help women of color against sexual harassment, assault and abuse of all kinds.

The movement started with young people and eventually it was felt that adults needed them too. The empathy people showed for each other gave life to the movement itself.

Present

Burke's idea reached a larger audience on Monday when Actress Milano tweeted Me Too with the organization's link. For now, Me too shows no signs of slowing.

"The company said that in less than 24 hours, 4.7 million people around the world have engaged in the "Me too" conversation, with more than 12 million posts, comments and reactions. According to Facebook, more than 45% of people in the United States are friends with someone who's posted a message with the words 'Me too.'"-CNN

It is far-reaching and it was needed. Hope the movement changes the mentality with which we grew with all these years.
